Menstruation

Once your period arrives, you may be feeling pretty bleurgh and unmotivated, thanks to low levels of estrogen. BUT, if you do feel up to it, moving your body while on your period can have a lot of benefits, both physically and mentally.

For many menstruators, the first day or two of a period often comes with cramping, most often felt in the lower abdomen and lower back. Opting for a gentle yoga flow that focuses on opening through the hips and lumbar spine might help ease cramps by calming your nervous system and stretching the spots that feel tight.

If you are feeling up to it, this can actually be a good time to build strength thanks to relatively high testosterone during this phase. The follicular phase technically starts after the first day of your period, so you might notice your energy and motivation rising by day two or three.

Regardless of which phase of your menstrual cycle you are in, though, it’s important to listen to your body. Your menstrual cycle is just one factor in how ready you feel to train on any given day, so take into account any other factors such as stress, how much sleep you had the night before, whether you drank alcohol the day before and your overall training load.
